PRACTICE

Solidarity manifests itself through different forms of human values, behaviors, protocols, negotiations, which do not necessarily share the same base. In order to built a common ground and critical understanding, the studio explores the term within different methodologies, considering our different backgrounds and putting different perspectives to our practice.

HOW ARE OUR STRUGGLES EMBODIED ON A SPATIAL BASIS AND IN WHAT SENSE CAN UNCERTAIN TIMES CHANGE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF SOLIDARITY ? HOW DOES (IN-)VULNERABLE ANTI-SOLIDARY ARCHITECTURE OF RECONSTRUCTION AFFECT THE SOCIETY ? ARE NON-PLACES SPACES OF SOLIDARITY ? HOW DO THEY EMERGE AND WHO CARES FOR THEIR REPRODUCTION ? HOW DOES SOLIDARITY EMBODY ON A SPACIAL BASIS ? HOW CAN SOLIDARITY BE PRACTICED WITHIN SPATIAL ISOLATION ? CAN A COURTYARD OF THE BERLIN BLOCK BECOME AN ENCOUNTER MACHINE ? WHAT IF THE HUMAN PERSPECTIVE IS NOT ASSOCIATED TO THE GENERAL TRUTH ? HOW OFTEN DO WE CARE ABOUT THE STRUGGLES OF OTHERS ? HOW CAN WE LEARN FROM CRITTERS ? IN WHICH CONDITION DO WE LEAVE PLACES FOR OTHERS TO COME ? DO WE REALLY LISTEN TO OTHERS ? HOW DOES IT LOOK LIKE AFTER WE ́VE BEEN THERE ? HOW TO FIND THE APPROPRIATE TOOLS TO COMMUNICATE RULES AND PROTOCOLS ? HOW DO WE NEGOTIATE THOSE RULES ? DO WE TAKE THE TIME NEEDED TO EXPLORE, LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND OUR SURROUNDINGS AND OURSELVES ? HOW CAN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE BE INTERACTIVE, SOLIDARY AND ACCESSIBLE, INDEPENDENT FROM INVESTORS AND ARCHITECTS ? DO WE QUESTION ENOUGH SHARED NORMS AND VALUES ? FOR WHOM ARE THE CITIES BUILD ? IS A SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL SHIFT NEEDED WHICH IS BASED ON UNLEARNING ? WHAT MEANS SOLIDARITY IN TERMS OF RECONSTRUCTION ? ARE ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS SPACES OF SOLIDARITY ?

HOW WE WORK

In the conditions of isolation and physical distancing, processes based on collaboration, discourse and exchange were challenged. Within the summer term 2020 the studio developed different forms of communication, experimenting with digital spaces and the intersection of analogue and online communication. Digital platforms played a crucial role not just as the main teaching/ learning source, but mostly as the base of a collective care practice. Within this structure the studio worked on individual projects as well as on the common practice of the studio itself.

Throughout the process of the design a discourse raised on the relation of non-institutions and universities, on spaces of learning as spaces of solidarity themselves. Non-institutions like Floating Berlin, Haus der Statistik and Stechlin Institut built the necessary support structure for knowledge production in uncertain times.
